ANOTHER MASS GRAVE HAS BEEN FOUND NEAR HUE IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THE BODIES OF 44?

  • Description

ANOTHER MASS GRAVE HAS BEEN FOUND NEAR HUE IN SOUTH VIETNAM. THE BODIES OF 44 PEOPLE WERE DUG UP IN A JUNGLE CLEARING 16 MILES SOUTH OF THE OLD IMPERIAL CAPITAL. THEY ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN EXECUTED BY THE COMMUNISTS DURING THE TET OFFENSIVE LAST YEAR.

A VIET CONG DEFECTOR LED GOVERNMENT SOLDIERS AND RELATIVES OF MISSING PERSONS TO THE SPOT. AFTER THE BODIES WERE UNCOVERED, RELATIVES LIT JOSS-STICKS AT THE GRAVESIDE AND PRAYED.

MOST OF THE BODIES HAD DECOMPOSED, MAKING IDENTIFICATION DIFFICULT. HOWEVER, RELATIVES MANAGED TO IDENTIFY SOME OF THE BODIES BY THE SHIRTS, TROUSERS, DOCUMENTS, IDENTIFICATION CARDS AND EVEN THE TEETH. THE BODIES WERE PICKED UP AND WRAPPED IN PLASTIC SHEETS FOR RE-BURIAL.

DURING THE BATTLE OF HUE, MORE THAN 3,000 PEOPLE WERE REPORTED MISSING. LATER, MANY WERE FOUND BURIED IN MASS GRAVES, APPARENTLY EXECUTED BY THE VIET CONG.
