The Senator, who had earlier heard that his planned visit to Pakistan had been cancelled by the Pakistani Government, began the day at a hospital run by the War on Want relief organisation. He was conducted around the camp by Mother Teresa, an Albania nun famous for her relief work in India.

The Senator's tour was conducted in heavy rain, but thousands of refugees defied the downpour to greet him, chanting "Long Live Kennedy" and "Mukti Chai" (We Want Freedom).
