Background: This has been one of the coldest winters Sao Paulo has seen in years. Winter temperature usually does not drop below 7 or 8 degrees centigrade. This year, however, cold nights have registered as low a temperature as 2ø C., which, in a tropical country is quite a change, especially to those who, for one reason or another can be found sleeping in the streets, without shelter or appropriate clothing.
Members of various religious clans, both franciscan and jesuit priests could be found one night, giving away blankets, food and hot drinks to the unaided poor and homeless who were found sleeping in gateways and on the sidewalk.
Other social service people, from private institutions also followed along in order to help the needing ones.
Almost invariably, the awakened sleepers thought those people were there in order to put them in jail, were no little surprised by finding out that blankets, food and drinks were being offered instead.
