    A FUEL-BLOODED CHEROKEE INDIAN, JOE THORNTON, 42, TRIUMPHED IN THE MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP, SCORING 2,230 POINTS. THORNTON, NOT INCLUDED IN THE OFFICIAL U.S. TEAM, WENT TO OSLO AFTER PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS AT HIS TULSA HOME TOWN HAD PAID HIS FARE. ANOTHER V.S. BOWMAN, C. SHERMAN, WAS SECOND WITH 2,187 POINTS. FINLAND'S J. SANDENN CAME THIRD (2,185).

    AMERICA'S NANCY VONDERHEIDE SET A NEW WORLD WOMEN'S RECORD OF 2,173 POINTS TO WIN THE WOMEN'S TITLE - SEVEN POINTS MORE THAN RUNNER-UP MRS. LAURIE FOWLER, OF BRITAIN. THIRD: MISS B. DEPTOVA OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA, 2,143.
