ONE OF LONDON'S MOST FAMOUS LANDMARKS - ST.PAUL'S CATHEDRAL - IS GETTING ITS FIRST WASH?

  • Description

ONE OF LONDON'S MOST FAMOUS LANDMARKS - ST.PAUL'S CATHEDRAL - IS GETTING ITS FIRST WASH SINCE IT WAS COMPLETED IN 1710.ALREADY THE GREAT WEST FRONT HAS BEEN SCRUBBED WHITE - AN OPERATION WHICH HAS TAKEN MORE THAN A YEAR.IT HAS BEEN PAID FOR BY AN ANONYMOUS GIFT OF GBP10,000.ON MONDAY, THE NEW LORD MAYOR OF LONDON, IN A SPEECH IN THE CITY'S GUILDHALL, APPEALED FOR A FURTHER GBP150,000 TO FINISH THE WHOLE BUILDING.

SO FAR, MORE THAN FIVE MILLION GALLONS OF WATER HAVE BEEN USED TO REMOVE THE LAYER OF DIRT AND SOOT, IT PLACES MORE THAN AN INCH THICK.NO CHEMICALS ARE USED: JUST WATER, WIRE BRUSHES AND SHEER HARD RUBBING.

THE DECISION TO GO AHEAD WITH THE 'FACE LIFT' LAST YEAR, CAUSED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CRITICISM.THE CLEAN UP OF THE WEST FRONT WAS REGARDED AS SOMETHING OF A TEST.CATHEDRAL OFFICIALS NOW SAY THEY ARE 'DELIGHTED' WITH THE RESULTS.LIKE THE LORD MAYOR, THEY LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING ST.PAUL'S AS IT LOOKED WHEN SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN FINISHED IT.BUT IT WILL BE AT LEAST FOUR YEARS BEFORE THE WORK IS COMPLETE.
