  • Description

The military trial of 16 alleged Basque Nationalist guerrillas will go ahead in the northern garrison town of Burgos next Thursday (December 3).

The Burgos trial has aroused wide reaction. There have been demonstrations by Spanish workers and students and protests from prominent clergy.

The hearing was to have started on Monday, but we unexpectedly adjourned after defence lawyers appealed to the Supreme Court for the trial to be held by an ordinary court instead of before a court martial. The trial was also to have been held in camera with armed guards surrounding all entrances to the court rooms. However, this has now been changed and the proceedings will be open, but the trial will still be held in a military court.

The 16 Basque Nationalists, including two Roman Catholic priests and two women, face charges of murder, banditry and terrorism, and political offences against the state. The state prosecutor is demanding the death penalty for six of the accused and prison terms totalling 750 years for the others. Sixteen more, all said to be members of, or sympathisers with, the organisation E.T.A. (Basque, Homeland and Liberty) will be tried in their absence. They fled the country when police began rounding up members of E.T.A. following outbreaks of violence in the Basque region. More than half of those who fled are thought to be living in Britain and the rest in eastern Europe.
