    Twenty-two years ago today the Allied armies landed in Normandy. And today on of the leaders of that D-Day invasion, Field Marshall Lord Montgomery, returned to the City of Potsmouth, centre of the operation, to pay a personal tribute to the men who died. He went to the Cathedral to lay a commemorative stone, a symbol of the determination to complete the building in time for the twenty-fifth Anniversary of D-Day in 1966. Then the nave will be a memorial for all those who took part in the D-Day landings.

    Representatives of most of the units which took part in the invasion watched the simple ceremony. Earlier they had heard the Field Marshall pay tribute to the men in the field. In every battle, he said, there came a time when a commander had to rely on the steadiness of his junior leaders and men. He went on:
