  • Description

SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL DIED IN LONDON THIS MORNING (SUNDAY). HE WAS 90. THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF HIS DEATH DREW CROWDS OF LONDONERS TO HIS HOME IN HYDE PARK GATE. FLAGS ON EMBASSIES AND PUBLIC BUILDINGS WERE LOWERED AT HALF-MAST, WHILE, FROM ACROSS THE WORLD, TRIBUTES TO SIR WINSTON POURED IN. NEWS ORGANISATIONS PAYED THEIR OWN TRIBUTE - AND VISNEWS ACHIEVED THE FASTEST-EVER TURN AROUND OF FILM AT THEIR LONDON OFFICE.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF SIR WINSTON'S DEATH CAME A LITTLE AFTER 0835 (GMT) AND RADIO SERVICES IN BRITAIN AND IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD INTERRUPTED THEIR PROGRAMMES TO TELL THEIR LISTENERS. AT HYDE PARK GATE IN LONDON, WHERE NEWSMEN HAVE KEPT A CONSTANT VIGIL OUTSIDE SIR WINSTON'S HOME SINCE HE BECAME ILL, CROWDS OF LONDONERS QUICKLY GATHERED. MANY OF THEM WEPT OPENLY. DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATIVES OFFERED THEIR CONDOLENCES TO LADY CHURCHILL AND THE FAMILY, AND EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES LOWERED THEIR FLAGS IN TRIBUTE.

FLAGS WERE LOWERED TOO AT THE ELYSEE PALACE IN PARIS - OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE OF FRANCE WHO WAS A CLOSE ASSOCIATE OF CHURCHILL DURING THE TENSE DAYS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR. PRESIDENT LUEBKE OF WEST GERMANY HAD THE FLAG OVER HIS OFFICIAL RESIDENCE LOWERED WHEN HE HEARD THE NEWS. FORMER CHANCELLOR KONRAD ADENAUER AND THE PRESENT CHANCELLOR, LUDWIG ERHARD OF WEST GERMANY BOTH APPEARED ON TELEVISION TO PAY THEIR OWN TRIBUTES TO SIR WINSTON. CHANCELLOR ERHARD SAID: "GERMANY KNEW HIM AS A GREAT FOE, BUT ALSO AS A GREAT CHAMPION OF RECONCILIATION." DR. ADENAUER - BORN ONLY A YEAR AFTER CHURCHILL - SAID THAT HE "GENEROUSLY HELD OUT HIS HAND TO SMOOTH A WAY FOR OUR COUNTRY INTO THE COMMUNITY OF FREE PEOPLES."
CHURCHES THROUGHOUT THE BRITISH ISLES WERE FILLED - AND MANY IN THE CONGREGATIONS SOBBED AS TRIBUTES WERE PAID FROM THE PULPITS. IN LONDON'S WESTMINSTER ABBEY THE CONGREGATION STOOD IN SILENT TRIBUTE.

QUEEN ELIZABETH WILL LEAD THE WORLD IN MOURNING SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL WHEN SHE ATTENDS HIS FUNERAL NEXT SATURDAY. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST TIME THAT AN ENGLISH MONARCH HAS ATTENDED THE STATE FUNERAL OF A COMMONER.

AFTER THE FUNERAL CEREMONY IN LONDON, SIR WINSTON'S BODY WILL BE TAKEN BY TRAIN TO THE CHURCHYARD OF THE LITTLE OXFORDSHIRE VILLAGE OF BLADON - NEAR HIS BIRTHPLACE, BLENHEIM. THE GRAVES OF HIS FATHER, LORD RANDOLPH CHURCHILL - WHO DIED SEVENTY YEARS AGO TODAY - AND HIS AMERICAN MOTHER ARE IN THE CHURCHYARD. WHEN SIR WINSTON'S BODY IS LOWERED INTO ITS GRAVE, ONLY THE FAMILY WILL BE PRESENT - IN CONTRAST TO THE TRUNDLING GUN CARRIAGE, THE BUGLES AND THE SLOW MARCHING TROOPS IN LONDON.

THE NEWS OF SIR WINSTON'S DEATH BROUGHT ITS OWN TRIBUTE FROM NEWSMEN THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. NEWSPAPERS ROLLING OFF THE PRESS IN LONDON'S FAMOUS FLEET STREET CARRY DARK HEADLINES ACROSS THEIR FRONT PAGES. VISNEWS ACHIEVED ITS FASTEST TURN-AROUND EVER OF NEWSFILM SHOWING IMMEDIATE REACTION TO THE NEWS. POLICE ON MOTOR-CYCLES HELPED THE VAN CARRYING THE FILM TO THE AIRPORT TO GET THERE IN RECORD TIME. FURTHER CO-OPERATION FROM AIRLINE OFFICERS MEAN THAT CUSTOMERS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD, NOW NUMBERING MORE THAN SEVENTY, RECEIVED THEIR FILM AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.
