  • Description

A British bull escaping a death penalty imposed on it by the Agricultural Ministry now grazes on an Oxfordshire farm - far away from talk of capital punishment.

The bull, at home with the other animals of the farm, is a 14 month-old Ayrshire prise winner but the Ministry condemned him to death recently for not conforming to bread standards.

In the words of the Ministry - backed by a breeding society referee - the bull is of a defective or inferior conformation likely to beget defective or inferior progeny.

The bull escaped capital punishment through a Ministry statement issued later that they had no objection to the bull's deportation ...

But as a persona non grata, each day spent on the soil of England costs a fine of GBP3. One London mass circulation daily, indignant over the bull's fate told eleven million readers: We'll save Ferdinand. And the daily bought Ferdinand from the owner for GBP350 to pay the fine.

Earlier Seattle boxing manager Tom O'Laughlin offered over the transatlantic telephone to buy the bull as an exhibit in a sports and boat show. The owner declined the offer.

One future home mentioned is Luxembourg. Meanwhile Ferdinand - a bull with the gentle facial features of a cow - spends his reprieve with the other animals on the farm.
