Background: INTRODUCTION: The World Boxing Council's Flyweight champion, Antonio Avelar, has knocked out his South Korean opponent Kim Tae Sik to retain his title. The contest in the Chang-chung Gymnasium in Seoul on Sunday (30 August) was quickly over.

SYNOPSIS: Antonio Avelar, in the darker shorts, was making his first defence of the title he won from Japan's Shoji Oguma in May. For the Korean fans, it was a chance to see their hard-hitting champion Kim Tae Sik in action. The challenger started well in the first round, but the champion was unruffled.

Kim's career includes twelve knockouts in fifteen contests, but he was soon under pressure from the Mexican champion.

The contest was only one minute forty two seconds into the second of the fifteen scheduled rounds, when Kim's challenge came to an abrupt end. Avelar seemed to hit kim from behind and the challenger collapsed to the canvas. The Korean crowd was enraged by the nature of the knock-down punch.

But the American referee had no hesitation in naming Antonio Avelar the winner.

For Kim, his pre-match prediction that he would capture the champion's crown had turned sour. Avelar had confirmed his prowess as the title-holder.
