  • Description

A handful of parachutists have quietly established a "Committee of Public Safety" today in the normally sleepy lobster fishing port of Bonifacio, on the southern tip of Corsica.

The whole island is now in the hands of the dissidents, and there is complete calm - though opponents of the transfer of power have been threatened. No-one seems to be worrying much about the future, though anxious hotel-keepers have urged tourists not to depart.

Though all may on the surface appear quiet on the island, there is still a strong under current of support for the men of "Les Pares" who made this coup, which under current comma to the surface at all public meetings. There were strong reactions, as is and on our film, when the take-over of Bastia and the formation of a 'Committee of Public Safety' was announced from the balcony of the Marie in Bastia, by Colonel Tomaso, by deputy Arrighi, and civilian representative M. Delbecque. Colonel Tomaso, now Governor of the Island, is a Colonel of the famous Spahis - during the war the bridge of his nose was shot away but the tough rangy little colonel has consistently refused plastic surgery and makes do with a leather strip and sticking plaster.
