Shyness reportedly prevented pop singer Mick Jagger from turning up at the gala British premiere of his film about the legendary Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, but hundreds of fans virtually closed London's Piccadilly Circus to see the stars arriving at the London Pavilion for the opening of the film "Ned Kelly".

Despite the absence of the film's star the fans were not disappointed as they crowded around to watch the personalities stream in. Among then Sean Connery with his Australian-born wife Diane Cilento, Australia singer Judith Durham (formerly of the Seekers singing group) actresses Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave, and oscar-winning director John Schlesinger.

Standing inside the cinema also watching the stars was Jagger's mother, Mrs. Eva Jagger with her husband and niece. Mrs. Jagger explained why her son had not turned up. She said he was just too shy and didn't like seeing himself on the screen. She offered to hold his hand, but said even that didn't work.
