  • Description

THE IVORY COAST CELEBRATES CHILDREN'S DAY ON SUNDAY (7 DEC) AND IN ABIDJAN THERE WAS THE USUAL COLOURFUL MARCHPAST AND DISPLAY AT THE HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY STADIUM.

THE STADIUM WAS CROWDED AS THE CHILDREN AND THE VARIOUS PERFORMERS PARADED ROUND THE ARENA. AMONG THE MINISTERS AND OFFICIALS WATCHING THE PROCEEDINGS WAS MR MAMADOU COULIBALY, PRESIDENT OF THE IVORY COAST ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL, CHOSEN AS THIS YEAR'S "PRESIDENT OF HONOUR".

THE THEME OF CHILDREN'S DAY THIS YEAR POINTED TO THE NEED TO TRAIN MORE TEACHERS AND YOUTH LEADERS FOR THE PROTECTION AND EDUCATION OF THE YOUNG.

AFTER THE MARCH-PAST CAME THE DISPLAYS, AND THE NOVELTY THIS YEAR WAS A TROUPE OF POLISHED MAJORETTES, TRAINED IN THEIR SNAPPY DRILL MOVEMENTS BY A PRESIDENT FRENCH BUSINESS-WOMAN AND HER HUSBAND.

ANOTHER ADDITION WAS A DISPLAY OF FOLK-DANCING FROM DIFFERENT REGIONS OF THE IVORY COAST.

THERE WAS THE CUSTOMARY DISPLAY OF GYMNASTICS, AND IF THESE WERE MARKED MORE BY ENTHUSIASM THAN PERFECTION OF MOVEMENT, IT SHOULD PERHAPS BE POINTED OUT THAT GYMNASTICS DO NOT PLAY AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE FRENCH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM, WHICH THE IVORY COAST FOLLOWS.

ALTOGETHER IT WAS AN EXCITING OCCASION, BOTH FOR THE CHILDREN AND FOR THE ADULTS WHO CAME TO JOIN THEM ON THEIR OWN SPECIAL DAY.
