City authorities in Paris have become increasingly worried over the state of their streets in recent years ... particularly with the problems left by the capital's canine population
So have the pollution-conscious. Responding to their ever-growing worries, the inventors have come up with a novel idea ... canine public conveniences for the use of perambulating poodles and other breeds
The new-style toilets, which come complete with flushing water, have been named "canigites", and they are designed to cater for the needs and inclinations of all sizes of dogs
In the time-honoured Pares tradition, the "canigite" is expected to occupy the same place in busy city life as the traditional male "urinoir"
The would's first was ceremoniously opened in the Square de Clignancourt, in the city's Montmartre district, earlier this week. But it does not seem to be a great success so far with its customers
Proud owners who trot their canine pets along to the convenience have found that the dogs, in the main, refuse to perform. Most of them still prefer the more commonplace delights of the payment. Only that most French of all dogs, the poodle, has deigned to follow the cit's head and utilise the innovation
Publicity about the "canigites"has beer wide throughout the city as builders and authorities like attempt to recondition dog-owners and their pets. Even so, the coyly flower-bordered conveniences have mystified some unsuspecting passers-by ... and amazed others
Soon the canine public toilets will become a common sight in Paris streets. The city plans to install at least 80 of them in the campaign to cut down street pollution

Even the best-behaved of dogs can be stubborn on occasion
Eventually, the city plans to erect eighty of these canine conveniences around Paris. Most dogs, though, have already shown their contempt for the new establishments ... in the most natural way
