  • Description

MORE THAN 6500 ISRAELI YOUTHS TOOK PART YESTERDAY IN AN INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF WEST JERUSALEM AND AROUND THE WALLS OF THE OLD CITY. DURING THE PARADE THEY MARCHED PAST PRIME MINISTER, MRS. GOLDA MEIR, AND DEFENCE MINISTER, GENERAL MOSHE DAYAN. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.

FLAGS HAD FLOWN AT HALF-MAST THROUGHOUT ISRAEL ON TUESDAY TO MARK THE DAY WHEN ISRAEL REMEMBERS THOSE KILLED IN WARS SINCE 1948. WEDNESDAY WAS A DAY OF CELEBRATION TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE, AND YOUTHS FROM ALL OVER ISRAELI MARCHED ALONG A 4 1/2-MILE (7 1/2 KMS) ROUTE THROUGH THE CITY. THE ROUTE INCLUDED THE TRADITIONAL, BIBLICAL MARCH ROUND THE WALLS OF THE OLD CITY. DURING THE PARADE FOUR FOUGA MAGISTER FRENCH-BUILT JET FIGHTERS FLEW OVER THE CITY.

THE YOUTHS WHO TOOK PART IN THE PARADE ARE MEMBERS OF GADNAH YOUTH SQUADS -- THE PARADE IS NAMED AFTER THEM. THEY WEAR ARMY UNIFORMS AND MANY OF THEM CARRY WEAPONS, BUT YESTERDAY'S PARADE WAS AN ENTIRELY PEACEFUL AFFAIR AND THE PRESENCE OF THE SINGING SQUADS OF YOUTHS IN THE STREETS OF OLD JERUSALEM DID NOT PROVOKE ANY HOSTILE REACTIONS FROM THE ARAB POPULATION.
