  • Description

AFTER SIX WEEKS OF TESTING IN THE ARCTIC, THE WORLD'S LARGEST AIRCRAFT.....THE LOCKHEED C5 GALAXY....HAS JUST RETURNED PERFORMANCE.

FOR ITS ARCTIC TRIALS THE C-5 WAS BASED AT EIELSON AIR FORCE BASE IN ALASKA, WHERE GROUND CREWS OF TEN WORKED IN TEMPERATURES OF 35 DEGREES BELOW ZERO.

THE C-5 IS 248 FEET LONG, 65 FEET HIGH, AND HAS A WINGSPAN OF 223 FEET. PARTICULAR INTEREST WAS CENTRED ON ITS CAPABILITIES AT SHORT FIELD LANDINGS. NEW BRAKE AND ANTI-SKID SYSTEMS WERE GIVEN A THOROUGH WORKOUT ON ICE-SLICK RUNWAYS DURING THE PERIOD OF TRIAL.

THE AIRCRAFT'S MAIN TEST WAS AN EIGHT-HOUR FLIGHT TO THE NORTH POLE AND BACK TO EIELSON BASE. UNDER THE COMMAND OF MAJOR JOHN HURLBUT THE C-5 WAS AIRBORNE IN LITTLE MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND FEET. THE BROOKS MOUNTAIN RANGE WAS PASSED EN-ROUTE TO THE POLE. A SHIFTING MAGNETIC FIELD IN POLAR REGIONS OFTEN PLAYS HAVOC WITH NAVIGATIONAL INSTRUMENTS BUT ALTHOUGH IT WAS DARK WITH NO GROUND REFERENCES, AS THE C-5 REACHED THE EARTH'S NORTHERNMOST AXIS, THE CREW...AIDED BY NEW EQUIPMENT....CIRCLED AND HEADED BACK WITHOUT DIFFICULTY.

HAVING SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED TEST FLIGHTS IN THESE FRIGID TEMPERATURES THE LOCKHEED C-5 GALAXY LATER RETURNED TO ITS OHIO BASE. THIS SUMMER IT FLIES SOUTH FOR TRIALS IN THE HEAT OF EL CENTRO, CALIFORNIA.
