  • Description

THE FUNERAL OF A WRITER-POLITICIAN WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE WAS USED AS A MASSIVE SYMBOL OF OPPOSITION LAST SATURDAY AGAINST THE REGIME OF SOUTH VIETNAM'S PRESIDENT NGO DINH DIEM.

HEAVY PRESSURE HAD BEEN EXERTED BY THE GOVERNMENT TO TRY AND PREVENT THE LARGE FUNERAL OF NGUYEN TUONG TAM, THE COUNTRY'S LEADING NOVELIST. HE SAID IN A SUICIDE NOTE THAT HE WAS TAKING HIS LIFE AS A PROTEST AGAINST POLITICAL REPRESSION IN SOUTH VIETNAM, PARTICULARLY OF CATHOLIC DIEM'S REPRESSION OF BUDDHISTS. HE COMPARED HIS SUICIDE WITH THAT OF THE BUDDHIST MONK, QUANG DUC, WHO BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH FOUR WEEKS AGO.

TWELVE HUNDRED PEOPLE FOLLOWED THE CORPSE FROM THE MORGUE TO THE CEMETERY PAGODA. DURING THE MARCH, A BANNER SAYING THAT TAM KILLED HIMSELF AS A POLITICAL PROTEST WAS UNFURLED OVER THE HEARSE.

RELATIVES AND OTHER MOURNERS HAD TO BE CARRIED INTO THE PAGODA FOR SERVICES. ONE MALE RELATIVE TRIED TO JUMP INTO TAM'S GRAVE, BUT WAS RESTRAINED.

UNIFORMED AND SECRET POLICE KEPT A TIGHT CONTROL OF THE PROCESSION.
