  • Description

TWO SURPRISE GOALS - ONE FOUR MINUTES INTO THE GAME, AND THE OTHER FOUR MINUTES FROM THE END - RESULTED IN MOROCCO AND GHANA DRAWING THEIR OLYMPIC QUALIFYING MATCH IN CASABLANCA ON SUNDAY.

BEFORE THE MATCH STARTED, THE GHANAIAN AMBASSADOR TO MOROCCO WAS INTRODUCED TO BOTH TEAMS.

IT WAS GENERALLY A RATHER DULL GAME, DOMINATED BY THE MOROCCANS AND WITH THE BEST FEATURE BEING THE EXCELLENT MOROCCAN DEFENCE FOR ALL BUT THE LAST FEW MINUTES.

THE MOROCCANS WERE ON THE ATTACK FORM THE OUTSET AND THEIR FIRST RAID ON THE GHANA GOAL WAS REWARDED WHEN SAID MANAGED TO SLIP THE BALL PAST NEAWU, THE VERY GOOD GHANA GOAL-KEEPER.

NOT CONTENT WITH THEIR ONE GOAL LEAD, THE MOROCCANS KEPT UP THE PRESSURE, BUT THEY HAD NO FINISH TO THEIR ATTACKS AND ALTHOUGH THEY HAD TERRITORIAL DOMINATION FOR MOST OF THE PLAY, THEY HADN'T THE STRENGTH IN THE PENALTY AREA TO CLINCH THE MATTER.

AS THE GAME MOVED INTO THE SECOND HALF AND THEN THE MINUTES TICKED AWAY, IT LOOKED AS IF MOROCCO WERE CERTAIN TO WIN, BUT SOCCER IS A GAME FULL FOR SURPRISES. SUDDENLY THE MOROCCAN DEFENCE, WHICH HAD SELDOM PUT A FOOT WRONG, WAS CAUGHT UNAWARES BY ATTUQUEY.

ATTUQUEY, UNMARKED, PRESSED ONTO THE MOROCCAN GOAL. THE STADIUM WENT SILENT AS ATTIQUEY'S SHOT HAD MOROCCAN KEEPER, ALLAL, BEATEN, AND THE BALL WENT SAFELY INTO THE BACK OF THE NET.

NOW THE TEAMS MEET AGAIN IN ACCRA ON THE LAST DAY OF THIS MONTH TO DECIDE WHICH ONE WILL QUALIFY FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN MEXICO.
