    SIKHS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD GATHERED AT NANKANA SAHIB, NEAR LAHORE IN WEST PAKISTAN ON SUNDAY TO CELEBRATE THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF GURU NANAK, THE FOUNDER OF THE SIKH RELIGION. THE FESTIVITIES WERE CENTRED ON THE SMALL TOWN OF NANKANA SAHIB, MILES (88 KMS) FROM LAHORE, BUT THEY WERE ECHOED IN GURDWARAS (TEMPLES) AROUND THE WORLD.

    IN THE CENTRE OF SUNDAY'S CELEBRATIONS WAS THE GURDWARA JANAMAS. THERE SIKHS -- THE WORD MEANS "DISCIPLE" -- OFFERED THANKS AND PRAYERS.

    THE CELEBRATIONS WERE STARTED OFF BY THE WEST PAKISTAN CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. JUSTICE QADIERUDDIN, WHO SAID THAT THE PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN WERE PROUD OF THE MAN WHO 500 YEARS AGO "LIT THE TORCH OF SPIRITUAL LIGHT".

    SEVERAL THOUSANDS SIKHS -- ABOUT 5-THOUSAND HAD CROSSED INTO WEST PAKISTAN FROM INDIA FOR THE ANNIVERSARY -- THEN TOOK PART IN A MASSIVE PROCESSION, CLIMAXING THREE DAYS OF FESTIVITIES AND PRAYER.
