    THE FIRST BATCH OF BELGIAN PARATROOPS WHO TOOK PART IN THE STANLEYVILLE AIRDROP, FLEW BACK TO BELGIUM TODAY (TUESDAY). THE FIRST PLANE, AN AMERICAN C-130 TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT, TOUCHED DOWN AT MELSBROECK MILITARY AIRPORT NEAR BRUSSELS SOON AFTER 0500 GMT. OTHER PLANES BRINGING THE TROOPS HOME ARE DUE TO LAND AT THE AIRPORT AT HALF-HOURLY INTERVALS. FEW OF THE TROOPS HAVE BEEN AWAY FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE OF WEEKS, BUT THERE WERE SOME TEARS OF RELIEF FROM RELATIVES AS THE MEN STEPPED FROM THE PLANE.

    THE WITHDRAWAL OF THE BELGIANS FROM THE CONGO BEGAN ON SUNDAY. THEY WERE FLOWN FROM KAMINA BASE IN NORTH KATANGA PROVINCE TO THE BRITISH ATLANTIC ISLAND OF ASCENSION. IN TWO SEPARATE OPERATIONS, THE TROOPS HAD BEEN DROPPED FIRST INTO STANLEYVILLE, AND THEN INTO THE NORTHERN TOWN OF PAULIS, TO RESCUE EUROPEANS HELD HOSTAGE BY THE REBEL FORCES.

    THEY RETURN TO A WARM WELCOME IN BRUSSELS. SEVERAL THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED IN THE CHILL PRE-DAWN AROUND MELSBROECK AIRPORT AS THE FIRST PLANE LANDED. LATER IN THE DAY THE TROOPS ARE TO MARCH THROUGH BRUSSELS IN A PARADE.
