Background: In Halifax, touring Soviet students meet their Canadian counterparts. The visiting students are on a tour of universities throughout Canada, a tour with a two-fold purpose. On the one hand, the Soviet expect to learn something of university curriculum and administration, and on the other hope that their contacts will results in increased friendship and understanding between their two nations. The visitors said that almost all Soviet students are subsidized to some extent during their five or six years in institutions of higher learning. On politics, they said that a minority of Soviet students belong to the Communist Party, but all believed in its ideals.
