  • Description

Argentine President Juan Peron was back at work Friday (30 November) following a nine-day illness. His condition was officially described as bronchial, but some reports indicated that he might have suffered a mild heart attack -- giving rise to fears that he might not be able to continue in office.

The Argentine Vice-President is Maria Estela Isabel Martinez de Peron, the President's third wife. If General Peron was forced to leave office because of ill-health, the conflict between left and rightwing factions, which he has calmed, could blaze anew.

Among the duties General Peron performed on his first day back at his desk, was the signing of an agreement setting up a "National Social Security Week". It was President Peron who established a social security programme in Argentina during his first term of office as President, more than twenty-five years ago.

Also on Friday, General Peron's Government pledged to step up security measures to protect foreign executives after threats by a self-styled Peronist guerrilla organisation to kill Ford Motor Company executives.
