  • Description

Rhodesia's Prime Minister, Ian Smith, will announce fresh plans soon to resolve the black-white political crisis in his country, Mr. Smith's security adviser, Mr. Ted Sutton-Pryce, told a news conference on Friday (9 April).

Mr. Sutton-Pryce said they would run parallel with "progressive implementation of our offensive policy in the security arena, involving military, civil and psychological action." But he gave no details.

He said the opening of a new guerrilla war front from neighbouring Zambia was possible. Such a new front, he said would force Rhodesia into a "partial general mobilisation".

Mr. Sutton-Pryce said black nationalist guerrilla forces totalled 1,800 fully-trained men, of whom about 700 were inside Rhodesia. The total was expected to increase as training courses were completed.

A political move had been expected from Mr. Smith following the breakdown in March of talks with nationalists seeking power for the country's six million blacks, who outnumber the ruling whites by 20 to one.
