  • Description

A runaway tram packed with factory workers, many of them women, crashed into another tram in Vienna Aug 2 killing 18 Viennese and injuring 80.- the worst traffic accident in the history of the City.

The runaway tram with failed brakes overturned, jamming a lorry and a car between it and the second tram. This tram also overturned.

The accident was during the evening rush-hour. The first tram was built 1913 - Viennese papers Aug 3 strongly criticised the use of trams over 40 years old, although the 1913 tram had emergency brakes.

The car had its bonnet smashed. Passengers' belongings and wreckage littered the street. Next day Vienna was in mourning - long black flags flew from the City Hall. President Adolph Schaerf of Austria on holiday in Corinthia sent a telegram of condolence to the Mayor of Vienna.
