  • Description

Following his visits to the United States, Britain, Western Germany and the Soviet Union, President Sekou Toure of Guinea arrived recently in Czechoslovakia.

A year ago, Sekou Toure led Guinea out of the French Community. Since then the President of this tiny state - with a population of 2 1/2 million - has been wooed by both East and West. He is creating what he calls Africa's first "People's Democracy".

Guinea has already signed trade agreements with several Eastern European countries, who have supplied experts to replace French technicians who left when the country became independent. Czech specialists help to operate Guinea's main airport, and from Czechoslovakia comes cement for Guinea's new buildings, and a sizeable supply of small arms. Czechoslovakia is also to provide a new radio transmitter for the capital, Conakry. The transmitter - still under construction - was shown to the President during his tour of Czechoslovakia.

Support for Guinea from Western countries is increasing. Trade and technical aid agreements have recently been made by President Sekou Toure with France, Britain and other countries of the West.
