    IN AN INTERNATIONAL MILE RACE AT THE JOHN F.KENNEDY STADIUM IN DUBLIN SNELL FINISHED IN THIRD PLACE.THE RACE WAS EXPECTED TO BRING A NEW WORLD RECORD, EITHER FOR SNELL OR POSSIBLY FOR ONE OF THE BRITISH CONTENDERS.

    THE RACE WAS RUN IN COLD BLUSTERY CONDITIONS.ALL HOPES FOR A NEW RECORD FADED AT THE HALF MILE WHEN THE TIME WAS ALREADY TWO MINUTES.

    ALAN SIMPSON, THE BRITISH MILE RECORD HOLDER, STEPPED UP THE PACE IN THE LAST FEW HUNDRED YARDS OPENING A GAP THAT NEITHER WIGGS NOR SNELL COULD CLOSE.

    SIMPSON'S TIME WAS THREE MINUTES 56.9 WIGGS FINISHED SECOND IN THREE MINUTES 57.5, AND SNELL IN THREE MINUTES 59.9 - 6.3 SECONDS OUTSIDE JAZY'S RECORD.

    SIMPSON'S TIME WAS ALSO POINT THREE OF A SECOND OUTSIDE HIS BRITISH RECORD FOR THE MILE.
