Background: Three young French Basques have been on a week's hunger strike outside Bayonne Cathedral in southern France. The three started their protest on January 1st to draw attention to the growing agitation by Basques in both France and Spain.
All three began their hunger stoke after French police had rounded up six Spanish Basque refugees in Bayonne and shipped them off to northern France, where they were to be forced to live.
Police investigation followed criticism in Spain that the French authorities had not taken actin to arrest the self-proclaimed Basque assassins of Spanish Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco. At a press conference held near Bayonne in December, four hooded men claimed they had killed Admiral Carrero Blanco in the name of the Basque Separatist Organisation.
At the same time, a French Basque organisation has called on members of its community to show solidarity with the Basques in Spain. The thee on hunger strike are two 18-year-old students and a 24-year-old worker. They were filmed during the sixth day of their strike on Sunday (January 6).
The same day, French police stated thy had arrested three of the men involved in the secret press conference claiming the assassination of Admiral Carrero Blanco.

At first criticised for their inaction, the French police since say they have arrested three Spanish Basques, have shipped six others off to northern France and have raided the offices of a Basque organisation.
