  • Description

Emergency airborne rescue operations in Peru fly in supplies and personnel to devastated areas and fly out the injured in Sunday's massive earthquake. With an estimated 40,000 killed, the survivors are now in desperate plight, without food and medical care, exposed to freezing temperatures and outbreaks of typhus, typhoid and measles.

Aerial surveys show the extent of the disaster area resulting from the 40 second quake wider then originally believed, with the worst hit valleys in the Huaylas corridor, where the towns of Yungay and Huaraz were virtually wiped off the map.

Troops landed near Huaraz cleared land for a makeshift airstrip in the race against time to aid the injured victims.
