  • Description

This pair of dogs is now in New Delhi on the first stage of a journey to Washington, United States.

The story began a long time ago when a member of the White House staff asked a colleague who was going out to the U.S.Operations Mission in Katmandu, Nepal, to see if he could manage to obtain for him two dogs, male and female.

With the cooperation of the Nepal State authorities, the dogs were found in the Himalayas, but whether in Nepal or Tibetan territory is not certain. In Nepal these dogs are called Bhotia - which means Tibet, as well as a people which inhabit the Nepal-Tibet border.

The male dog, now called Bhotia, weighs 66 pounds and is about 10 months old. When first encountered the dogs were rather aggressive, so much so that the Americans who brought them down to New Delhi had them safely penned up in a wooden crate in the back of a Jeep car.

However, the fierceness of the animals was short-lived. A few good feeds and they became as friendly as ever. Indeed they were so friendly that the two Americans who were bringing them back for their colleague in the United States wanted a pair for themselves.

The dogs are as fit as a fiddle, according to Dr. Sharma, who is in charge of the veterinary department of the New Delhi Municipal Committee. Bhotia, lets out a loud growl as he rams at the bars of his kernel and greets visitors. He is now a majestic mastiff standing 2 feet at the shoulders, and is balck with weak patches of brown. His mate, Kanchi, is also a pure mastiff. They make a fine pair straining at the leash.

Dr. Sharma said the dogs were fine specimens and in perfect health. "They can now become Americans and occupy the White House", he added. There is some speculation as to whether the dogs might not be intended ultimately for President Eisenhower, but there is nothing to indicate that it may be so.

The dogs are expected to leave for the United States in February.
