Background: MANCHESTER CITY SCORED ANOTHER SOCCER TRIUMPH FOR ENGLAND TONIGHT WHEN THEY WON THE EUROPEAN CUP WINNERS CUP, DEFEATING THE POLISH CLUB GORNIK ZABRZE 2-1 IN VIENNA. LAST NIGHT THE LONDON CLUB, ARSENAL, WON THE EUROPEAN FAIRS CUP BY BEATING ANDERLECHT OF BELGIUM.

ONLY 7,000 PEOPLE BRAVED THE RAIN TO WATCH THE MATCH, PLAYED AT PRATER STADIUM.

MANCHESTER TOOK AN EARLY LEAD WHEN AFTER ELEVEN MINUTES NEIL YOUNG SCORED FROM A REBOUND OFF GORNIK GOALKEEPER HUBERT KOSTKA YOUNG FIGURED IN CITY'S SECOND GOAL, IN THE 43RD MINUTE. HE BROKE AWAY ALONE AFTER A BLUNDER BY THE POLISH DEFENCE AND WON A PENALTY KICK WHEN HE WAS BROUGHT DOWN BYU KOSTKA'S DIVING TACKLE. THE GOALIE ALMOST STOPPED THE RESULTING KICK, TAKEN BY WORLD CUP PLAYER FRANCIS LEE, BUT THE BALL ROLLED IN BENEATH HIM TO GIVE CITY A 2-0 LEAD.

THE POLES FOUGHT BACK DESPERATELY IN THE SECOND HALF, SEEMINGLY THE BETTER SIDE ON A PITCH NOW COVERED WITH PUDDLES. AFTER A SERIES OF NEAR MISSES, GORNIK SCORED IN THE 68TH MINUTE WHEN THEIR CAPTAIN STANISLAW OSLIZLO NETTED FROM A FREE KICK.

MANCHESTER WERE LUCKY TO SURVIVE THE REMAINDER OF THE MATCH, BUT HELD ON TO EARN ENGLAND'S THIRD VICTORY IN THE CUP WINNERS COMPETITION. THE PREVIOUS WINNERS WERE TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR IN 1963 AND WEST HAM UNITED IN 1965.
