  • Description

SOMETHING NEW ON THE SHIPPING FRONT HAS MADE ITS DEBUT IN BELGIUM -- 75 MILES (120 KMS) FROM THE SEA.

THE BELGIANS HAVE CALLED IT A "SLOPING LOCK". IT'S BEEN BUILT AT RONQUIERES, SOUTH OF BRUSSELS, ON THE BRUSSELS - CHARLEROI CANAL. THE LOCK COST GBP20M AND HAS TREBLED THE CAPACITY OF THE CANAL FROM 3 TO 10 MILLION TONS A YEAR.

HOW DOES IT WORK? BARGES UP TO 1,300 METRIC TONS ARE HAULED IN GIANT TUBS UP A MILE-LONG (.625 KMS) SLOPE. THE CHANGE IN LEVEL IS MORE THAN 200 FT (61 METRES) AND ELIMINATES 15 LOCKS WHICH TOOK HOURS TO NAVIGATE.

IT'S BROUGHT A MUCH NEEDED BOOST TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF BACKWARD AREAS IN THE SOUTH OF BELGIUM.

WORK ON THE LOCK BEGAN IN 1962 AND INCLUDES A HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER UNIT WHICH COVERS THE NEEDS OF THE "SLOPING LOCK" AND IN ADDITION SELLS POWER TO THE NATIONAL GRID WORTH GBP80,000.

THE GIANT TUBS EACH WEIGH 5,000 TONS. THEY ARE HAULED UP THE SLOPE BY ELECTRIC MOTORS AT AROUND FOUR FEET (1.2 METERS) A MINUTE. THE ENTIRE OPERATION IS REMOTE CONTROLLED.

IN ADDITION TO A CUT IN THE TIME THE NEW TECHNIQUE MEANS THE CANAL IS NO LONGER RESTRICTED TO VESSELS OF A MAXIMUM TONNAGE OF 300 TONS.

TWO MORE INCLINES, USING THE SAME TECHNIQUE, ARE BEING BUILT IN THE SOVIET UNION, ONE WITH A LIFT OF 400 FT (120 METERS).

AND THE LIFT IN BELGIUM IS ALSO LISTED AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION.
