The Tanzanian Ambassador to the United Nations and the Chairman of the U. N. Decolonisation?
The Tanzanian Ambassador to the United Nations and the Chairman of the U. N. Decolonisation Committee, Mr. Salim, said on Friday (14 May) that intensification of the armed struggle in Rhodesia was the only solution to the problem. In a statement at a news conference Mr. Salim, who recently headed a fact-finding mission to a number of African countries, said the avenues for peaceful negotiations in the Rhodesian issue had been completely blocked by the Smith regime there. This was despite the efforts of the liberation movements and leaders of countries surrounding Rhodesia, he said.
Although there was evidence of a split in the leadership of the liberation movement the African National Council, he said, there was no split on one basic issue -- that the time for talk was at an end, and that force was the only way to solve the issue.
