    DR. HASTINGS BANDA, PRIME MINISTER OF MALAWI, ARRIVED IN LONDON BY AIR TODAY (SATURDAY). HE HAD FLOWN FROM BLANTYRE WITH A BRIEF STOP AT SALISBURY, WHERE HE WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY GREETED BY LARGE CROWDS AT THE AIRPORT.

    AT SALISBURY, POLICE HAD TO CLEAR THE AIRPORT HALL BEFORE DR. BANDA'S PLANE ARRIVED. THE CROWD, LED BY CHEER LEADERS, THEN TOOK UP THEIR PLACES ON THE PERIMETER OF THE AIRPORT.

    AFTER HE HAD BEEN GREETED BY RHODESIAN PROTOCOL OFFICERS, DR. BANDA SPOKE TO PRESSMEN. HE WAS ASKED ABOUT THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF MALAWI. HE SAID: "SINCE I HAVE BROKEN THE FEDERATION, WE HAVE MORE DEVELOPMENT THAN EVER BEFORE...MALAWI IS CREDITWORTHY." HE TOLD REPORTERS THAT THE GOVERNMENT PLANNED TO SPEND GBP45 MILLION OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS ON DEVELOPING INDUSTRY AND ROADS. HE SAID HE HAD ALREADY RAISED GBP7 MILLION FOR THIS YEAR'S PROJECTS.

    WHEN HE WAS ASKED IF HE WAS SATISFIED WITH THE DEFENCES OF MALAWI, DR. BANDA SAID SIMPLY: "YOU CANNOT INVADE A COUNTRY WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE BEHIND THE GOVERNMENT."
    DR. BANDA IS TO LEAVE LONDON ON SUNDAY FOR BERLIN, BONN AND PARIS, BEFORE RETURNING TO BRITAIN FOR THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS 'CONFERENCE, WHICH IS DUE TO START ON JUNE 17. AFTER THE CONFERENCE HE WILL VISIT ALGERIA.
