Background: French Prime Minister Debre, December 13, visited the Riviera town of Frejus, devastated when the Malpasset dam burst, December 2.

After inspecting reconstruction and salvage work, Premier Debre presided over a meeting of local authorities, and heard a report on relief measures taken since the flood catastrophe. Bad weather and heavy rains, threatening the towns anew to the point of evacuation, have been hampering progress for some days.

    M. Debre was told that 299 persons lost their lives and 87 persons are still missing; 100 houses were destroyed, 700 people left homeless, 200 motor vehicles smashed, and 5,600 acres of land laid waste. Damage is now assessed at about 2,500 million france.

At a stormy session, December 13, of the General Council of the Var Department - where Frejus is situated - concerning the cause of the disaster, a motion was adopted proposing that administration of relief funds be placed in the hands of the mayor and municipal council of Frejus. The first of 25 prefabricated houses was due to be erected December 14.
