The President of Gabon, M. Leon Mba, paid an afternoon call today (Friday) on the much-visited French President de Gaulle. During their talks the Presidents signed an agreement to establish a Leon Mba Foundation at the Claude Bernard Hospital in Paris.
The foundation is partly the outcome of President Mba's gratefulness for care during his own serious illness in August, 1966. M. Mba was in the Claude Bernard Hospital for over three months as he recovered from what the hospital described as 'serious fatigue'.
One of the professors who treated M. Mba, Professor Pierre Mollaret, is to take up a Professorial Chair under the foundation. He will be joined by Professor Maurice Payet, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Dakar.
The foundation will train specialists in African diseases, and in the science of reanimation. Gabon has pledged to contribute 75 million CFA Francs (about GBP109,650 sterling), most of it for the building. France's contribution will include hospital equipment, and the two professorial chairs.
