  • Description

MOST OF THE WESTERN AREAS OF CUBA WERE RECENTLY BATTERED BY A HURRICANE, WHICH BROUGHT IN IT'S WAKE TORRENTIAL RAIN AND WIDESPREAD FLOODING. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED FROM LOW-FLYING GROUND AND AREAS IN THE PATH OF THE FLOODS.

IN THE COUNTRY IF GUANE, MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE WERE FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR HOMES AS THE TORRENTIAL RAINS STRUCK. IN THE NEARBY COUNTY OF LA HABANA, ANOTHER 4,000 WERE EVACUATED. HOWEVER, THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF INJURIES OR LOSS OF LIFE.

THE HURRICANE PASSED FORM THE ISLAND TO THE FLORIDA SHORES BUT, BY THE TIME IT REACHED THE MAINLAND, IT'S EFFECTS HAD LESSENED.

THE FLOODS CAME DURING THE HARVEST SEASON FOR THE COFFEE AND FRUIT CROPS AND THE CUBAN FARMERS IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO SALVAGE WHAT THEY COULD OF THEIR DAMAGED CROPS.
