This year the Fair, which runs until September 17 coincides with the fourth Summit Conference of Non Aligned Nations.
Delegates to the Preparatory Committee for the conference also attended the Fair opening.
Forty five countries are exhibiting - the greatest number ever. The United States has a very strong representation with 47 firms taking part. It is the first time an American flag has been officially flown in Algeria since diplomatic relations were broken off in 1967, and the first participation in the Fair since 1964.
Algeria has been seeking the industrialise rapidly by increasing steel production, building cement plants; establishing electrical and mechanical industries and expanding the textile industry.

This year the United States was represented for the first time since 1954. Forty seven American firms exhibited and the American flag flew officially in Algeria for the first time since 1967.
The three Presidents toured the stands and examined goods for all over the world.
As in previous years capital equipment has ???radominated - heavy machinery and machine tools.
The Soviet Union was strongly represented.
The Algerian economy has been expanding particularly in the establishing of electrical and mechanical industries.
And as the Algerian economy had developed, so has the Algiers Trade Fair increased in importance.
