  • Description

THE FLOW OF FRANCE'S MOST FAMOUS RIVER, THE SEINE, HAS SEEN STEMMED TO PREVENT FLOODING IN THE CAPITAL, PARIS.

TOMORROW (TUESDAY) THE FRENCH MINISTER OF WORKS, M. PISANI, WILL OPEN A DAM SYSTEM ON THE SEINE AT TROYES, 168 KILOMETRES (ABOUT 104 MILES) FROM PARIS.

WORK ON THE RESERVOIR SYSTEM WAS STARTED SIX YEARS AGO. THE SYSTEM INCLUDES FIVE DAMS - THE LARGEST 25 METRES (80 FEET) HIGH. ALTOGETHER, ONE MILLION 200-THOUSAND CUBIC METRES (MORE THAN 1 1/2 MILLION CUBIC YARDS) OF EARTH HAD TO BE EXCAVATED FOR THE PROJECT.

THE RESERVOIR HAS A CAPACITY OF 205-MILLION CUBIC METRES (224-MILLION SQUARE YARDS).

A SERIES OF CANALS - TWELVE KILOMETRES (SEVEN AND A HALF MILES) LONG - CARRY WATER FROM THE RESERVOIR BACK INTO THE MAIN RIVER SYSTEM. THREE OF THE CANALS TAKE THE FORM OF TUNNELS OUT THROUGH HILLS.

THE IMMEDIATE EFFECT OF THE DAM HAS BEEN TO MAKE THE LEVEL OF THE SEINE AT TROYES FALL FORTY CENTIMETRES (NEARLY SIXTEEN INCHES) - SUFFICIENT TO PREVENT FLOOD IN THAT AREA.

HOWEVER, SOME EXPERTS, BELIEVE THAT SYSTEM WILL NOT GIVE SUFFICIENT PROTECTION TO THE ENTIRE PARIS REGION.

THE AIM OF THE SYSTEM ID TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE OF THE CATASTROPHIC FLOODS IN PARIS OF 1911 AND 1955.
