    AFTER OPENING THE TUNNEL AT CHAMONIX IN THE FRENCH ALPS, THE TWO PRESIDENTS DROVE THROUGH THE TUNNEL TO THE ITALIAN SIDE.THE SEVEN-MILE (II KILOMETRE) JOURNEY UNDER EUROPE'S HIGHEST MOUNTAIN TOOK ONLY FIFTEEN MINUTES.THE TUNNEL HAD BEEN CLOSELY SEARCHED FOR BOMBS BEFORE THE CEREMONIES BEGAN.

    OUT IN THE ITALIAN SUNSHINE, HUNDREDS OF POLICE MINGLED WITH THE CROWD AS PRESIDENTS DE GAULLE AND SARAGAT INSPECTED GUARD OF HONOUR.

    IN A SPEECH, PRESIDENT SARAGAT SAID THE TUNNEL WOULD REINFORCE "THE DESIRE FOR UNITY AMONG ALL NATIONS ON THE CONTINENT." IN HIS REPLY, PRESIDENT DE GAULLE DESCRIBED THE TUNNEL AS ADDITIONAL PROOF OF THE SOLIDARITY BETWEEN ITALY AND FRANCE.

    THE MONT BLANC TUNNEL COAST GBP20 MILLION - AND THE LIVES OF 23 WORKERS.AT FIRST ONLY PRIVATE CARS AD BUSES WILL BE ALLOWED TO PASS THROUGH IT.FAMILY CARS WILL PAY A TOLL OF ABOUT GBP2 A JOURNEY.AFTER THE ROADWAY HAS BEEN USE FOR A SHORT WHILE, COMMERCIAL LORRIES WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE A FULL SCHEDULE -- AT A CHARGE OF GBP15 A JOURNEY.

    THE TUNNEL HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED TO TAKE 450 VEHICLES AN HOUR IN EACH DIRECTION.IT WILL REDUCE THE OLD SURFACE ROUTE BETWEEN PARIS AND ROME BY 137 MILES (220 KILOMETRES).
