    RESCUE WORKERS WERE TODAY (TUESDAY) WITHIN A FEW FEET OF A MINER WHO HAS BEEN TRAPPED UNDERGROUND FOR FIFTEEN DAYS IN A GOLD MINE NEAR CHONGYANG, IN SOUTH KOREA.

    THE MINER, CHANG-SUN KIM, IS ENTOMBED 375 FEET (115 METRES) UNDERGROUND. RESCUE TEAMS ESTIMATED THEY WERE WITHIN 12 FEET (FOUR METRES) OF HIM.

    THE TRAPPED MINER HAS KEPT HIMSELF ALIVE BY DRINKING WATER AND CHEWING WOOD BARK. A DOCTOR WHO SPOKE TO HIM BY TELEPHONE TODAY REPORTED THAT CHANG-SUN KIM WAS ALMOST COMATOSE.

    RESCUED WORKERS SAID THEY HOPED TO PULL THE TRAPPED MINER TO SAFETY LATER TODAY. A UNITED STATES ARMY HELICOPTER WILL FLY HIM TO SEOUL FOR HOSPITAL TREATMENT.

    CHANG-SUN KIM TOLD DOCTORS YESTERDAY HE WAS COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED, BUT HE THOUGHT HE COULD STAY ALIVE FOR TWO OR THREE DAYS LONGER.
