  • Description

A typhoon roared across Taiwan yesterday (Monday), killing 12 people and leaving a trail of destruction. Winds reached 120 miles an hour and were accompanied by violent rain squalls.

The typhoon, code-named Nadine, caused most of its damage in the eastern and southern parts of the island. More than 1,000 houses were damaged and, in several areas, banana and rice crops flattened.

Although Taipei escaped the full brunt of the storm, there was still considerable damage in the capital. Hoardings and signs were blown away and the bamboo scaffolding around a 10-storey building collapsed.

Power and water supplies were cut, as were road and rail links with the rest of the island. The heaviest damage was at a lumber yard where a fire burned for seven hours. It was started when a high-tension power line snapped during the typhoon - which has now blown itself out.
