Background: The inhabitants of Namibia, which is due to receive independence from South Africa at the end of 1978 are discussing their future.

SYNOPSIS: In Windhoek, the territory's capital, on Wednesday (1 September) Mr. Dirk Mudge, the white chairman of the Constitutional Committee, appealed to the South West African Peoples Organisation to join in the independence plans. SWAPO, one of the main nationalist groups in Namibia, is fighting a guerrilla war from outside to gain its own control from South Africa. The organisation says the Constitutional Conference is a 'puppet' of Prime Minister John Vorster's government. The Conference includes representatives from all Namibia's 29 ethnic and racial groups, including the white community. Mr. Mudge called on SWAPO to 'stop murder and arson' and solve its quarrells peacefully.

Meanwhile, South African businessmen have called for an end ??? discrimination based on colour. Dr. Jan Marais, chairman of the South African Foundation, a moderate lobby group of big business interests, spoke at another meeting in Windhoek on Wednesday.

South African Foundation Chairman Dr. Jan Marais: "And I would say that the most important one, not that will resolve the whole problem, is the dismantling of discrimination based on colour. Because with every second ticking up -- ticking off -- on our clocks, on our watches every day, it becomes less and less an acceptable standard of discrimination. We have to move in the right direction as far as discrimination on colour is concerned. "Secondly, and the two are linked, or related, we have to establish harmony in our own homes, in our won countries. And in order to establish this particular brand of harmony, it will be necessary to for all segments, or sectors, of our community."
