  • Description

THE ALL-MALE ELECTORATE IN SWITZERLAND, VOTING IN A NATIONAL REFERENDUM APRIL 1, REJECTED A PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT WHICH WOULD HAVE THE COUNTRY A PERMANENT NON-NUCLEAR POWER.

FILM SHOWS VOTERS IN ZURICH AT THE POLS. FIFTY-FIVE PER CENT OF THE OVER-ALL ELECTORATE VOTED, REJECTING THE PROPOSAL BY APPROXIMATELY 537,000 VOTES TO 286,000. THE BULK OF THE MAJORITY CAME FROM THE GERMAN CANTONS. IN THE THREE FRENCH SPEAKING CANTONS AND THE ITALIAN SPEAKING CANTON, THE MAJORITIES WERE FOR NON-NUCLEAR STATUS.

SWISS GOVERNMENT AND PARLIAMENT HAD URGED THE COUNTRY TO REJECT THE PROPOSAL BECAUSE IT WANTED TO HAVE FREEDOM IN THE FUTURE TO CHOOSE THE BEST AVAILABLE ARMAMENTS TO DETER ARMED ATTACK OF SWISS NEUTRALITY AND TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY AFTER ATTACK.

SUPPORTING THE GOVERNMENT'S EFFORTS WAS THE SOCIALIST PARTY. IT IS TO PROPOSE ITS OWN AMENDMENT TO THE CONSTITUTION UNDER WHICH APPROVAL BY THE ELECTORATE WOULD BE NECESSARY BEFORE THE ACQUISITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
