  • Description

Rescue teams have found the last two bodies of those missing in Wednesday's (11 May) disaster at the Ashibetsu Colliery on Hokkaido, Japan's main northern island.

SYNOPSIS: It's believed that as a gas explosion caused the massive cave-in along a gallery where 33 miners were working.

Seventeen miners were originally known to have been killed and nine injured. Seven others were trapped in heavy debris. For relatives, the harrowing wait began. It's believed the gas explosion occurred while blasting operations were being carried out.

The explosion happened in a narrow pit about 875 yards (800 metres) below ground and about 1,531 yards (1,400 metres) from the pit entrance. Nine injured men were quickly brought to the surface, but one of them died in hospital.

Rescuers seeking the remaining seven trapped miners were hampered by debris in the narrow pit. It wasn't until early on Thursday (12 May) morning that the last bodies were found. The final toll for the disaster was 25 dead and eight injured.
