In Khartoum. Sudan, November 17, an Army parade, at which General Ibrahim Abboud took the salute, opened the four-day celebration commemorating one year of military government. Exactly twelve months previous a bloodless Army coup brought General Abboud to power as President.
Making an anniversary speech, General Abboud said he was now seeking the best way for the people to participate in the country's government, and that his present Government was determined to resist the "destructive activities" which - he said - had led to the three attempted coups - one of them only two weeks ago - against his regime.
General Abboud claimed his Government had saved the country from economic collapse, and had successfully reached agreement with Egypt on division of the Nile waters -agreement which the old Government had failed to achieve. Development schemes could now proceed, and there would be adequate compensation for Sudanese affected by flooding when the Aswan High Dam was built.
Later, the President laid the foundation stone of a textile factory to be built in the Sudan with aid from the United States Government.
