Background: BOTH GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION PARTIES HAVE NOMINATED CANDIDATES FOR THE KEY POST OF INDIAN PRESIDENT, FOLLOWING THE RESIGNATION OF DR. SARVAPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN AT THE WEEKEND.

THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY HAS NAMED THE PRESENT VICE-PRESIDENT, DR. ZAKIR HUSAIN, AS ITS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. THE INDIAN CHIEF JUSTICE, MR. K. SUBBA RAO, HAS BEEN NOMINATED BY THE OPPOSITION PARTY.

DR. RADHAKRISHNAN'S TERM ENDS ON MAY 12, BUT ELECTIONS FOR HIS SUCCESSOR WILL TAKE PLACE ON MAY 6.

IF DR. HUSAIN IS ELECTED TO THE POST, HE WILL BE THE FIRST MOSLEM PRESIDENT OF INDIA.

PRIME MINISTER MRS. INDIRA GANDHI IS KNOWN TO SUPPORT DR. HUSAIN, BUT THERE IS SOME DOUBT THAT A MOSLEM CAN DEFEAT THE OPPOSITION CANDIDATE.

THE CONGRESS PARTY COMMANDS A NARROW 52 PER CENT MAJORITY IN THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE, MADE UP OF MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT AND STATE ASSEMBLIES, WHICH ELECTS THE PRESIDENT AND VICE-PRESIDENT.

THERE IS SOME POSSIBILITY THAT THE PARTIES WILL FIND A COMPROMISE -- AN AGREEMENT MAKING DR. HUSAIN PRESIDENT AND THE OPPOSITION'S SUBBA RAO VICE-PRESIDENT HAS BEEN DISCUSSED.
