    MR MACMILLAN SPENT MOST OF APRIL 28TH REVIEWING WORLD PROBLEMS WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY AT THE WHITE HOUSE. THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN LEADERS WERE DUE TO MEET AGAIN ON APRIL 29TH AND A COMMUNIQUE ON THE TALKS, PROMISED FOR APRIL 28TH WAS DELAYED FOR A DAY.

    A WHITE HOUSE RECEPTIONIST, MR DAVID POWERS, GREETED MR MACMILLAN WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE WHITE HOUSE. THE TWO LEADERS THEN TALKED TOGETHER FOR 45 MINUTES BEFORE CALLING IN ??? REMAINDER OF THE MORNING SESSION. MR MACMILLAN RETURNED TO BLAIR HOUSE, THE PRESIDENTIAL GUEST HOUSE, FOR A SHORT WHILE WITH THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR IN WASHINGTON, SIR DAVID ORMSBY-GORE. MR MACMILLAN RETURNED TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR LUNCH WITH THE PRESIDENT BEFORE RESUMING THE TALKS IN THE AFTERNOON.

    AT THE END OF THE FIRST DAY OF TALKS A WHITE HOUSE SPOKESMAN SAID MR MACMILLAN AND MR. KENNEDY "COULD NOT COVER ALL THE SUBJECTS WHICH THEY HAD PLANNED. THEY WERE RUNNING LONGER THAN EXPECTED." HOWEVER, AN ANGLO-AMERICAN STATEMENT SAID THE TALKS INVOLVED A DISCUSSION OF EAST-WEST RELATIONS WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE BERLIN PROBLEM AND THE FUTURE OF THE 17-NATION DISARMAMENT CONFERENCE IN GENEVA. THE PRESIDENT, ASKED BY REPORTERS AT LUNCHTIME HOW THE TALKS WERE GOING. REPLIED: "FINE, VERY GOOD."
