Background: About 100 Americans marched to the United States Embassy in Beirut on Thursday (26 November) to protest against President Nixon's decision to grant Israel five hundred million US dollars in aid.

A strong police force guarded the marchers as they emerged from the campus of the American University of Beirut to submit the petition to the American Embassy, about 200 yards (200 metres) away.

The petition, addressed to the United States Senate, was not handed in because the Embassy was closed for Thanksgiving. It will be submitted on Friday instead.

The petition said that aid to israel was contrary to the basic interest of the United States, and could only lead to more bloodshed. It called on the Senate to study all sides of the issue, without fear or bias, before allocating the money to Israel.
