  • Description

The heaviest snowfall since 1948 blocked roads and closed airports in the state of Utah, U.S.A, this weekend.

More snow has fallen in Salt Lake City in this storm than in the whole of last winter. Road teams trying to keep mountain and country routes open reported between 12 to 21 inches of fresh snow in a 24-hour period.

Utah is a skiing resort area, but what was good news for winter sports enthusiasts was bad for travellers. Salt Lake City International airport was closed and passengers had to wait for the runway to be cleared.

The snow made driving to work a hazardous journey. A local airforce base, one of the areas biggest employers, sent 20,000 employees home as the heavy fall made work impossible.

As soon as the storm passed, householders cleared their drives to enable cars to use the roads. But weathermen are predicting more snow in the coming weeks.
