  • Description

TWO HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-EIGHT VETERANS OF THE ROAD SET OFF FROM LONDON'S HYDE PARK THIS MORNING (SUNDAY) TO DRIVE THE 53 MILES TO BRIGHTON ON THE SOUTH COAST.

THE LONDON-TO-BRIGHTON RUN, WHICH IS NOT IN ANY WAY A RACE, IS NOT IN ANY WAY A RACE, IS TO COMMEMORATE THE ABOLITION OF A LAW WHICH REQUIRED CARS TO BE PRECEDED BY A MAN ON FOOT WAVING A RED FLAG.

TODAY'S WEATHER WAS NOT KIND TO THE DRIVERS, MANY OF WHOM WERE DRIVING IN OPEN CARS, AND WATERPROOFS WERE THE ORDER OF THE DAY BUT IN SPITE OF THE WEATHER MOST OF THE ENTRANTS CHUGGED OR PUFFED THEIR WAY TO THE FINISHING LINE.

FIRST ACROSS THE LINE WAS A 1901 PROGRESS DRIVEN BY MR. M.E. DAVENPORT, SECOND A 1900 NEW ORLEANS OWNED BY SIR CLIVE EDWARDS AND THIRD, AN UNOFFICIAL ENTRY, WAS DESCRIBED AS A 1904 MINERVO MADE FROM A SEWING MACHINE, BICYCLE PARTS AND A PRESSER.
